Kobe Bryant Signs $90-Million Contract Extension

Kobe Bryant is staying in Los Angeles at least until 2014. Bryant will receive close to $90 million from 2011 until 2014 after closing out a deal with the Lakers that could make it possible for him to end his career with the only team he has ever played for.

The Lakers star said he was very excited about signing the contract extension, as “it’s very rare to have a player play his entire career in one city.” Bryant, however, said that the new contract might not be his last. The 31-year-old Bryant has been with the Lakers since 1996, when Los Angeles acquired his draft rights from the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for Vlade Divac.

With Bryant’s contract extension, the Lakers are assured of having the core of their current roster until at least the 2012-2013 season. Pau Gasol and Ron Artest are also under contract until the 2013-2014 season while Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum’s current contracts will keep them in Los Angeles until 2013.

Prior to Bryant’s signing, it was speculated that the 12-time All Star would opt out of a contract extension and test the free agent market.
