Wikipedia Suffers Server Shutdown

An overheating problem caused the servers of Wikipedia to shut themselves down to avoid damage causing access blockage for almost two hours.600px-Wikipedia-logo

A navigation error message is produced whenever someone uses the site between 1 PM to 3 PM Eastern time.

Administrators tried to shift the traffic from the Amsterdam site to their Florida site. However, this failover mechanism is also broken.

“This problem was quickly resolved, but unfortunately it may take up to an hour before access is restored for everyone, due to caching effects,” the site said from their technical blog.

Wikipedia, according from its own site, is a free, web-based, collaborative, multilingual encyclopedia project supported by the non-profit Wikipedia Foundation.

Some users complained about the outage of service but most gave favorable and understanding statements. One posted that if it wasn’t for Wikipedia he’d be lost while another jokingly inquired if the incident will be put in the article about Wikipedia in the site of Wikipedia.
